How does Botox work?

FDA-approved Botox contains botulinum toxin, a safe neuroprotein that interrupts the nerve signals between the brain and the muscles where the nerves are located. When the active ingredient in Botox interrupts those nerve signals, it helps those muscles to relax, which causes almost-immediate improvement in the look of forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and even crow’s feet.

Botox Costs

Botox costs are among the more affordable anti-aging injections. The average Botox cost hovers at around $300 – $700. Botox pricing is conducted on a per-unit basis, with a single unit of Botox averaging at about $10 – $18. The number of Botox units you may need to achieve your results can have a direct influence on your total costs which will be discussed in your consultation.  Price varies.

Frequently Asked Questions

For cosmetic applications, Botox can be used to address lines and wrinkles on the forehead and eye area (crow’s feet), as well as lip lines. It may also be injected to soften the dimpling of the chin or into the muscles of the jaw to create a more slim appearance. In some cases, Botox may also be used by dermatologists to treat medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.

As with any procedure, whether medical or cosmetic, there is always a risk of side effects. Some patients may experience bruising, swelling, redness or tenderness around the injection site. These side effects resolve on their own within a few days or up to a week following Botox treatment. Some patients have minor bruising or redness immediately after treatment, but these side effects usually subside within a few hours. More serious complications are very rare.

Downtime is very minimal. Most patients resume work and the rest of their regular activities almost immediately after treatment.

Results usually appear within 24 to 48 hours of treatment.

Results vary, but most patients see improvements lasting for three to six months. Depending on your individual needs, Liz will put together a treatment plan that will effectively address your concerns. Book an appointment today to get started.

Treat Migraines

Botulinum toxin has been approved by the FDA to treat chronic migraine headaches in adults. Botulinum toxin is given at intervals of about every 3 months as multiple injections around the head and neck to try to dull future headache symptoms. On average, qualified medical specialists administer 31 botulinum toxin injections into seven specific head and neck sites. It is recommended that patients who suffer from chronic migraines discuss with their doctors whether botulinum toxin treatment is appropriate for them.

The most common adverse reactions reported by patients being treated for chronic migraine have been neck pain and headache, the FDA says. The FDA also has placed a “boxed warning” on the anti-migraine drug, onabotulinumtoxinA, marketed as botulinum toxin (Botox®, Xeomin, Dysport®) . The warning says the effects of the botulinum toxin may spread from the area of injection to other areas of the body, causing symptoms similar to those of botulism.

These symptoms can include swallowing and breathing problems. The FDA says it knows of no confirmed cases of the spread of the toxin effect when botulinum toxin has been used at the recommended dose to treat chronic migraines, severe underarm sweating, or conditions such as blepharospasm, an involuntary muscle spasm in the muscles surrounding the eyes.

The drug also can cause muscle weakness, double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, loss of bladder control, and hoarseness, Allergan’s statement says.
